This issue of TMR

*** This issue of TMR starts with a classic Yiddish Khanike song sung by The Western Wind Ensemble on their CD "The Channukah Story". [Website: www.westernwind.org. See http://www.westernwind.org/default.asp?pageid=11&recordid=3 for Table of Contents] *** A single chapter of Mendel Mann's autobiographical Di yidish-poylishe milkhome is given in Yiddish with many unfamiliar words in red. *** A glossary of these "hard words" follows. *** The next issue of TMR will comment on the chapter given here and elaborate on the theme of "dorfsyidn" ('rural Jews').

Suggested Glossary Corrections

Corrections follow Yiddish alef-beyz

1.*     here seems to refer to the fences one can see from afar, which is the basic meaning of this word in Polish, not to 'farms' [Moshe Taube].

2.*      is not 'long' but the name of a variety of pears, called beurré in French (see Niborsky's dictionary) and apparently beurre (without the accent) in English too (cf. http://www.sln.potsdam.ny.us/pears.html). [Moshe Taube]

3.   'I thank' [Zelda Newman]

4.* does not derive from but from Pol. piasek, plur. piaski   'sands', not 'hounds', 'bitches'. Here it probably is a geographical name. [Moshe Taube]

5.*    here is not 'permitted', but 'affable', 'friendly' - someone you can approach without fear [Moshe Taube]

6.*   could indeed mean 'rosy', but in the text we have which means 'whole-meal bread'.[Moshe Taube]

7.   is not simply a mattress, but specifically a straw-mattress [Moshe Taube]
