In this issue of TMR we notice briefly Yoysef Guri's latest reference work Oyfn shpits tsung; 500 yidishe shprikhverter, a multilingual (Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, English) collection of Yiddish proverbs; we also give the second installment of B. Yeushzon's scarce penny-pamphlet Vi azoy hob ikh gevunen oyf der loterey. (The first installment is in TMR. Vol 10.009; the third will be in TMR Vol. 10.011). Oyfn shpits tsung; 500 yidishe shprikhverter ('On the Tip of the Tongue; 500 Yiddish Proverbs'). The Hebrew University of Jerusalem: Department of Russian and Slavic Studies, 2006. Distributed by Magnes Press, P.O. Box 39099, Fax 972-2-5660341. Jerusalem 91390, Israel. E-mail" info@magnespress.co.il. Website: www.magnespress.co.il. [ISBN 965-90250-3-3]

Yoysef Guri has been studying idioms for three decades and has issued a series of multilingual volumes useful to layman and researcher alike. As early as 1978 he published his study of Russian idioms and their translation into Hebrew. Idiom research inevitably leads to wider lexicological investigation, especially that of folk-inspired and disseminated phrases we call proverbs. Over ten years ago Guri issued his preliminary Yiddish proverb collection Az der sof iz gut, iz alts gut ('All's Well That Ends Well') [Jerusalem 1993]. Guri's many dictionaries may be considered a single oeuvre. Indeed, I understand he is being urged to consolidate all his collections, expand them and make them available on-line as a unified Yiddish-idiom data base. In particular, translators lacking the intuitive linguistic grasp of the native speaker require easily accessed idiom glossaries. A truly comprehensive Yiddish dictionary of idioms will make use of the early efforts in this genre, going back at least a century and a half to the work of Abraham Tendlau and others. Tendlau's 1860 Gothic font collection of Yiddish proverbs and idioms (see title page below) has 1070 items and a 27-page index.

Readers may have minor criticisms to make of the latest Guri compilation. I would revise the archaic English in several translations. "Eyder onkumen tsu kinder, zol men beser shtarbn" is rendered 'Better die ere ask favors from children.' The sense is correct but not the style 'Better die rather than ask favors from children' is an improvement. A few other translations can be modified. "Ale Yevonim hobn eyn ponim" is rendered 'All Greeks (i.e. Tsarist soldiers) look alike.' This expression can also mean and may indeed principally mean -- that all Russsians/Ukrainians have the same (evil) character.

Tendlau, Abraham Moses, 1802-1878. Sprichwoerter und Redensarten deutsch-juedischer Vorzeit; als Beitrag zur Volks-, Sprach- und Sprichwoerter-Kunde, aufgezeichnet aus dem Munde des Volkes und nach Wort und Sinn erlaeutert von Abraham Tendlau. Frankfurt a. M., H. Keller, 1860.
