Subject: About this issue of TMR

In this issue we meet two species of word-lovers, one a poet and the
other a linguist.( a) In addition to his philological and folklore
interests, Prilutski was an attorney and a journalist, deeply immersed
in the day-to-day social and economic struggles of Polish, and
especially Warsaw, Jewry.(b) The op-ed given here illustrates both
Prilutski's civic and Yiddishist consciousness and the popular style he
employed in his newspaper writings.  In the course of promoting
vocational education, he does not forget to advocate Yiddish as
language of instruction:  "dos lernen darf forkumen in der
mutershprakh fun di shiler. dos iz an akzyome, velkhe neytikt zikh nisht
in iberike rayes" ['It is self-understood that classes should be
conducted in the mother-tongue of the students'.]

In the Foreword to the _Poyln_ volume in which many of his _Moment_
articles were collected, Prilutski writes that an old newspaper article
can sometimes illuminate the present better than a monograph can.
Change is constant and yesterday's press provides a fresh perspective on
events.  The subject of productivization in one context or another has
charged Jewish life for several centuries now.  The problem of training
the young for employment in a world where work opportunies are rapidly
receding has made it a universal one.  In less than a century the major
assumptions of Prilutski's rational argument -- that training and
education assure job security -- have been shaken, On the other hand,
one parochial similarity in contemporary Jewish life to the condition
described by Prilutski is the reluctance of Jewish employers in Israel
to hire Israelis in certain occupations (e.g., building, agriculture,
geriatric nursing) Also, the _partatsh_ is still with us, but not,
generally, in such areas as tailoring, machine tools. carpentry.
Prilutski can talk about industrial pursuits, about hinges and brackets;
he would have a difficult -- but not an impossible -- time writing about
our post-industrial world.

(a) Rivke Basman's latest volume of verse was reviewed in TMR 7.001 and
Prilutski has appeared in TMR both as author (vol. 1, no. 16) and
subject of a moving poem by A. Almi (vol. 3, no. 20).

(b) At the time this piece was written a third of a million Jews lived
in Warsaw.  Its Jewish communal apparatus, employing among others the
writer Y.-L.  Perets, was highly organized.  Thirty years after the
remarkable ORT schools began their historic work in Russia proper, the
Warsaw Jewish community created vocational courses for its youth that
excited the civic pride of Prilutski and others.

one Kh.  Levinshteyn, by stating that Yiddish, Hebrew and Russian
newspapers have reported the replacement of Jewish craftsmen by Gentile
ones.
