_The Mendele Review_: Yiddish Literature and Language (A Companion to _MENDELE_) ______________________________________________________ Contents of Vol. 02.026 10 September 1998 1) Yiddish Matters: From the Editor (Leonard Prager) 2) Yiddish bibliography for 1997-98 with addenda for 1996 (Hugh Denman) 1)---------------------------------------------------- Date: 10 September 1998 From: Leonard Prager Subject: Yiddish Matters: TMR Bibliography 1997-1998 (the editor) Though the field of Yiddish is relatively small, it is not small enough for any one person to encompass with any thoroughness. The books (not to mention the periodicals, disks, pamphlets, posters, etc.) issuing annually in, on and around Yiddish language, literature, Eastern-European Jewish history, and all the many related areas touching or illuminating Yiddish studies are far too many for even the most assiduous bibliographer to notice. Nonetheless, Hugh Denman, the TMR Bibliographer, has managed to assemble an impressive "Yiddish bibliography for 1997-1998 with addenda for 1996." Let us make this a truly cooperative effort: please send your corrections, additions and suggestions to Hugh Denman so that we can have an even more complete record of the published (including privately published) books of this lively world of Yiddish studies. Write to: Hugh Denman Benzion Margulies Lecturer in Yiddish Hebrew and Jewish Studies University College London Gower Street London WC1E 6BT, England (UK) tel. + fax: 00 43 5556 74881 2)---------------------------------------------------- Date: 10 September 1998 From: Hugh Denman Subject: Yiddish bibliography for 1997-1998 with addenda for 1996 YIDDISH BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR 1997-1998 WITH ADDENDA FOR 1996 by Hugh Denman Now that information is available concerning most books in the field of Yiddish that were published in 1997 the present moment would seem to offer an appropriate point at which to release a further issue of the TMR-Yiddish Bibliography. The need for such a bibliography becomes ever more apparent. The Yiddish listings in RAMBI are very far from comprehensive and the delay with which they appear has now grown to four years. Meanwhile, with the demise of _The Jewish Book Annual_, the excellent Yiddish listings that were formerly collated by Zachary Baker, Head Librarian of the YIVO Institute, have come to an abrupt (but, one would hope, temporary) halt with his 1995-1996 issue. There is room for argument as to the best periodicity for such a publication as this. On the one hand, there is much to be said for the convenience of complete calendar years. On the other, there is an obvious need to place bibliographic information in the hands of the reader as soon as possible. In this issue we have first as complete a listing for 1997 as it has been possible to achieve, followed by as many 1998 items as have come to attention so far this year. In addition we have a number of 1996 addenda that escaped attention in both Iosif Vaisman's original listing (TMR 01.003) and in my own supplement thereof (TMR 01.009). This is probably the best basis on which to continue these annual listings, i.e. each issue should consist of the whole of the previous year, as much as is available of the current year and addenda to cover omissions in the previous issue. These considerations will become obsolete when, as we hope, before long the bibliography becomes permanently available online. Very shortly I plan to issue my listings for 1995. This is probably as far back as it is worth while to go. Thus 1995 will become the TMR-Bibliography's year one. I should like to take this opportunity to thank those Mendelyaner and especially Ms. Estelle Souche of Lyon who were kind enough to draw omissions to my attention. Only if Mendelyaner continue to point out lacunae, whether by writing to Mendele, TMR or to me directly, will we be able to approach something like exhaustive coverage. The fact is that the Yiddish publishing market is exceptionally `tsezeyt un tseshpreyt' and many books appear with a degree of discretion that might lead one to believe that the publisher was anxious to avoid the vulgarity of wide distribution. Unfortunately there are still gaps in the bibliographic information below, particularly ISBN's and total numbers of pages. One can only appeal to readers having anything to do with the publication or sale of Yiddish books to try and ensure that full information is included in all publicity material. Naturally, I shall be most grateful for all emendations and augmentations. This bibliography aims to list all items in Yiddish, on Yiddish and translated from Yiddish. Normally it is clear whether an item meets these criteria. However, in a few cases (e.g. Dobroszycki and Perl below) the title of a publication may give the impression that the item belongs to some other area of Jewish studies. In such instances an attempt is made to determine whether there is sufficient of Yiddish interest in the work to justify its inclusion. In one or two cases a few brief words of explanation are offered in square brackets, but at the present moment a bibliographie raisonee is beyond the scope of these lists. One of the hardest areas to keep under observation are the publications of the various hasidic organisations. Even Zachary Baker was unable to keep track of the majority of these items, despite the fact that he was better placed to do so than I am. This omission is to be regretted, since many of these items are of potential interest to the secular Yiddishist, whether for literary, linguistic or pedagogic reasons (as can be attested by those items I have been able to list). Attentive readers will notice that I have reneged on my previous proposal to employ the bibliographic conventions advocated by Chicago U.P. This, I must admit, is for reasons of personal convenience only. For several decades now I have been accustomed to using the MHRA standards which intrinsically are equally, if not more, cogent than those of Chicago U.P., though somewhat less widely disseminated. Anyone for whom the miniscule differences are of significance can employ a number of software packages (none of which I have to hand at the moment of writing) to convert from the one system to the other. Orthographic and transcription problems intrinsic to a medium limited to ASCII characters remain as intractable as ever. Fortunately, there is no problem with the YIVO transcription of Yiddish, but inevitably some fine distinctions are lost in the Hebrew transcriptions, especially between vav and vet as well as between hey and het and it is inelegant to have to employ the sh-digraph to represent shin. All diacritics are lost in Polish and French and in German it is necessary to use the clumsy conventional substitutions for the umlauts. However, in the vast majority of cases the reader will be able to make the necessary adjustments. Only in the case of the odd proper name is information permanently lost as in the case of Bramson-Alperniene below, where one might not know that the name is spelled with an acute accent over the final e. 1997 Bartal, Israel & Israel Gutman (eds.), Qiyum veshever: yahadut polin ledoroteyhem, Jerusalem: Merkaz Zalman Shazar letoldot Yisra'el, 1997 [ISBN: 9652271179].
